Business & Investment Visas
The BIIP is no longer available to new applicants. The Government is considering a new, single Talent and Innovation visa (likely to begin in mid-2024) and has confirmed that it will not provide any new allocations for the BIIP visa.
Business and Investment Visas are a great way for individuals and their families to gain permanent residency in Australia. Through investing in a qualified business or managed fund, applicants can prove to the Australian government that are dedicated to build an Australian business and create employment opportunities. Depending on the amount of investment, a qualifying applicant might be eligible for various types of visas that could ultimately lead to permanent residency.
Business Innovation and Investment Visa (Subclass 188)
The Business Innovation and Investment (Subclass 188) Visa stream allows individuals to gain permanent residency in Australia through making an investment or managing a business.
There are three different streams under this visa:
- Business Innovation Stream
- Investor Stream
- Significant Investor Stream
Each stream has its own particular requirements, but all of them call for applicants to show they have what it takes to manage a legitimate business or investment in Australia. Applicants must be at least 18 years old, have a successful business or investment history, demonstrate functional English language ability (can be waived), they must pass the Department of Home Affairs of Australia’s health and character assessments and it is nearly always necessary to obtain a nomination from a state government for their application.
This visa entitles its bearer to unrestricted employment and study privileges and unlimited travel back and forth from Australia for the duration of your visa for your entire family and provides them with a pathway for permanent residency..
Investor Stream
Ideal Candidate
The Business Innovation Stream is most suitable for small and medium sized business owners to open a business in Australia.
Main Requirements
- Total assets of at least AUD 1.25 million.
- Business turnover of at least AUD 750,000.
- Invest and manage an Australian business.
- Stay in Australia for at least 1 year.
Investor Stream
Ideal Candidate
The Investor Stream would be a good fit for experienced investors and business owners looking for a low-risk passive investment alternative.
Main Requirements
- Total assets of at least AUD 2.5 million.
- Successful business/investment experience
- Invest AUD 2.5 million for at least 4 years.
- Stay in Australia for 2 of 4 years.
Significant Investor Stream
Ideal Candidate
The Significant Investor Stream allows experienced investors to make an investment in a complying significant investment.
Main Requirements
- Invest AUD 5 million for at least 4 years.
- stay in Australia for 160 days over 4 years.
